In an exploration of her own experience as a first-generation American, Kristina Cho, author of the award-winning baking book Mooncakes and Milk Bread, offers 100 recipes that blend the flavors of traditional Cantonese cooking with California ingredients and a midwestern sensibility.

In Chinese Enough, Cho turns to the savory side of cooking with recipes that are neither entirely Chinese nor entirely American, but Chinese enough. Here is an array of dishes to pair with rice, the cornerstone of Cantonese cuisine, including Triple Pepper Beef, Miso Pork Meatballs, and Seared Egg Tofu with Honey and Soy. Recipes like Smashed Ranch Cucumbers and Saucy Sesame Long Beans honor the Cantonese focus on vegetables. There’s a chapter dedicated to the joy of noodles, with creative takes on traditional dishes, birthed anew in a California kitchen—from San Francisco Garlic Noodles to Creamy Tomato Udon. Plus, a chapter of Banquet-Worthy Dishes teaches the Chinese art of food as celebration, a step-by-step guide shows how to employ friends and family in the kitchen to make dumplings, and the fruit-focused dessert section acts as a lesson on finishing a meal with a small, sweet act of affection. Woven throughout, Cho’s stories of her grandmother’s Chinese garden situated in the middle of Cleveland and falling in love over dim sum are a warm tribute to the nuanced and personal ways in which one can discover and define their own culture.

    Delicious and Approachable
This book is both beautiful and easy to follow. The recipes are clear and inspire confidence in trying to cook something new. With the info in this book, it was easy to visit my local Chinese grocery store and find and cook with new flavors and ingredients. Excited to keep coming back to this book, especially the noodles and scallion pancakes!

    Chinese Enough for You
Loved Mooncakes and Milk Bread that introduced me to wonderful Chinese pastries and sweets that I didn’t know existed even after visiting Chinese restaurants in major cities throughout the world. Couldn’t wait for Kristina’s next book “Chinese Enough” which brings a modern and unique freshness to Classical Chinese cuisine. What I like most about Kristina’s recipes is the satisfaction you get from creating a dish that you have only ever eaten in a restaurant and how much better it tastes from your own kitchen. Besides that many of the dishes are easy enough to make that you will inevitably want to add them to your regular go to meals. The more challenging ones are fun to make with friends and family as an exercise to see if you can make them turn out as beautiful as Kristina’s creations. Even if the presentation hasn’t always matched that photo in the book the taste has always exceeded my expectations. If you like to cook and want to add a little more flavor and variety to the dishes you serve up for friends and family “Chinese Enough” is a perfect addition to your culinary repertoire.

Accessible Chinese (Cantonese) cooking at home
This is Kristina Cho’s second cookbook and it is phenomenal. A great balance of weekday meals and recipes that you can invest in. I made the dumplings on a weeknight, had plenty freeze, and enjoyed them thoroughly! I used to live in LA (SGV side, IYKYK), so my dumpling standards are high – these hit the mark!Kristina’s blog has great recipes. The cookbook is worth buying because it has many more recipes AND she explains a lot of core concepts and ingredients needed for the recipes.A great compliment to other books on the shelf for Chinese cooking from different regions! More accessible than many other cookbooks of its class, but not sacrificing flavor or deliciousness.

    A beautiful and tasty cookbook
A book that is a feast for your tastebuds and eyes. I’ve so far tried the PB and Cheung Fun, Miso pork meatballs, and creamy tomato udon and am looking forward to more! Highly recommend the PB and Cheung Fun of those 3 and all 3 were reasonable weekday meals as far as timing to cook. After Mooncakes and Milkbread, it’s fun to try new recipes with more savory / dinning options. There are still sweet recipes though if you are interested.

Cookbook that makes you think and make good food
I truly adore this cookbook because it really gets me and my friends literally cheffing it up when we hang out and really puts into words what it’s like to grow up Asian American. This book as well as the first one, Mooncakes and Milk Bread, has tidbits throughout that make me keep flipping through, wanting to learn more about dumpling wraps, Asian market finds, appreciating my culture and life, and more. In turn I get to see more recipes that I wanna cook too! It’s also fun picking out recipes with friends because we get to read these bits and talk more about each other’s cultures and experiences over entire meals that come out amazing. In short, definitely recommend if you wanna make great food while having deep and insightful conversations with friends or family!
