This is THE book on Korean American Banchan!
I was really excited to receive this book. The combination of more traditional Korean recipes and Korea-AMERICAN recipes is amazing! I can’t wait to start cooking from this book! The recipes are simple and instructions clear. The stories that Choe includes with each dish is simultaneously familiar and unique. Super excited for this one!

A good cookbook for Korean American recipes
Banchan includes 60 recipes for Korean American side dishes. I am not too familiar with Korean American cooking, so I was definitely intrigued by the cookbook. The cookbook begins with an introduction to banchan and items to have in the pantry and fridge, which is useful. Next are the recipes under the categories Fermented & Preserved, Namul & Muchim (Fresh Vegetables), Jorim & Soy Sauce-Marinated, Stir-Fried & Steamed, Soups & Stews, Buchimgae (Pancakes), Cold Banchan, and Hot Banchan. Every recipe includes an ingredient list, an introduction to the recipe, numbered directions, and a photo. I definitely appreciate that every recipe includes a photo, and some of the recipes I would love to try are Oi Muchim (Spicy Cucumber Salad), Dubu Jorim (Soy-Braised Tofu), Kimchijeon (Kimchi Pancake), Kimchi Avocado Nigiri, and Cheesy Corn. The only small downside of the cookbook is that it does not include prep or cook times, so you have to read the directions to see if a recipe takes 20 minutes to make or an hour or more. Besides that, it is a good cookbook.

    Where to start?
I have bookmarked at least 10 recipes to make immediately-the best thing is, I already have the ingredients! I didn’t expect to find a jap chae recipe, and I am dying to try the kimchi fried rice right away. Tonight, though, we will have two banchan with an already planned supper. A really lovely, accessible, inspiring cookbook.

    Authentic
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. This is an absolute must buy! The recipes are incredibly easy to make, and the ingredients aren’t difficult to source, especially if you have an Asian Market in your area.I had everything on hand to make the Sesame Broccoli Salad, and the Sesame Tuna Salad for lunch today. They were simple to make, and tasted fantastic. The next recipe on my list to make is Sweet and Savory Grilled Kimcheese.I know I will be working my way through the entire cookbook, and I think this is one I would like to get in print too.

    Easy to follow recipes
This cookbook contains 60 Korean side-dish recipes, ranging from known, traditional banchan to the author’s modern takes on classic banchan recipes. Each recipe includes a personal story and a color photo, which was really helpful. The book includes a list of common pantry and fridge items that are needed to make these recipes. The item descriptions are helpful and the illustrations are cute but actual photos of the food items would be useful to beginners. I tried several of the traditional recipes and they were very easy to follow and very tasty (although I did have to decrease the amount of salt). The modern recipes, such as gochujang chicken salad or the kimchi mac and cheese, look interesting and not too difficult. I would recommend this book to beginners and beyond because the recipes are easy to follow and very accessible. The recipes I tried were delicious and the modern takes on banchan look very intriguing.* I received this book free of charge from NetGalley
