Don’t Get Burned!
In her newest book, Dr. Lani Simpson provides readers with no-nonsense, easy-to-understand advice about the sun and how our bodies react to sun exposure. This go-to-guide for all members of the family includes: practical information about how to obtain vitamin D from the sun safely, how to protect yourself and your family from sunburns, and how to find safe sunscreen products. This book examines how our ancestors worshiped the sun and how those beliefs shaped our modern relationship with the sun. Dr. Lani’s No-Nonsense Sun Health Guide advocates for a conscious and respectful relationship with the sun.
The sun is now listed as a carcinogen, this is true, especially when we allow our skin to burn and neglect basic sun protection. And we also need vitamin D, which is produced when certain rays interact with exposed skin. There are hundreds of conditions that have been associated with vitamin D deficiency including: multiple cancers, hormone imbalances, bone loss and osteoporosis and multiple sclerosis. So, how do we get this essential vitamin from the sun without damaging our skin that could end up causing skin cancers? Is taking a vitamin D supplement the answer?
The fact is, not enough and too much vitamin D can result in health consequences.
As a complete guide, it contains chapters on skin cancers, how to identify them, and as well as available treatment options. The final chapter covers the importance of sunlight itself that fosters our natural circadian rhythms for a good night’s sleep. These questions, and many more, are addressed in Dr. Lani’s No-Nonsense Sun Health Guide.

The Sun and your family’s health
Our sun makes Planet Earth a special place in the universe and makes human life possible. Many ancient people worshipped the sun and built their cultures around the solar calendar. The sun gives us life and produces Vitamin D through our skin, but it can also harm us when we donât properly protect ourselves.Dr. Lani Simpsonâs No-Nonsense Sun Health Guide cuts through the hype and explains how the sun both helps and harms us. She discusses what we can do to optimize Vitamin D production, the best time for sun exposure, and Vitamin D testing methods. Also, how can we protect ourselves from the sunâs harmful rays that might lead to skin cancer. Dr. Lani talks about her 20- year battle with various types of skin cancer and takes you through the best treatments once you are diagnosed.Dr. Simpson lifts the veil on sunscreen confusion and lists the sunscreen chemicals to avoid and the ones that are safe for you and your family to use. Lastly, the book covers the circadian rhythm. How sunlight and the lack of it affects our health in many ways including Seasonal Effectiveness Disorder and disturbance in sleep cycles.Dr. Lani Simpsonâs No-Nonsense Sun Health Guide is filled with practical tips and is written in an easy to read format. I loved reading it because I was always confused about which sunscreen is the best and which ingredients to avoid. I am now more confident about the best Vitamin D level for me, and the best method to test my Vitamin D level. This book will enhance the health of your entire family.

What you never knew but need to know about the sun and Vitamin D!
This is the 2nd book of Dr. Lani’s I’ve read (The 1st being her Non-Nonsense Guide to Bone Health), and, not surprisingly, I found it to be comprehensive, yet easy to follow along. The book has helpful, easy-to-understand diagrams (great for visual learners) for explaining topics that might otherwise be hard to visualize through just text (e.g. what happens when the sun’s rays hit our skin, how is Vitamin D converted to its active form in the body)…And each chapter has a summary of key points, which helps tie everything together nicely.A couple of key focus areas throughout the book:-The sun can be both beneficial for us and harmful at times-Your skin will only produce Vitamin D under the right conditions-The sun’s rays (UVA & UVB) have different effects on the body-Too low of Vitamin D and too high of Vitamin D levels can both lead to health issues-Vitamin D doesn’t act alone. Calcium, magnesium, vitamin K2 are all important.-The connection between the sun, your diet, and skin cancer prevention-Skin cancer treatments including alternative approaches-Sensible sun exposure and sun protectionOverall, well worth the read with lots of great information (supported by research).

Crucial information you won’t find anywhere else
This is the kind of book you don’t realize you need until you read it.While you might think it’s only about sunscreen, it actually takes a deep dive into what our bodies really absorb from the sun, need via supplementation, and how both impact overall health and well-being. Never before have I read such a thorough explanation of the strength of the sun’s rays vis a vis ones geographical location on planet Earth; the way D3 is measured, absorbed and utilized; the other body processes rely upon optimal levels of D (calcium absorption, bone formation, the role of the parathyroid glands, and more), and a complete section on skin cancer types and treatments. The vitamin D chapters alone make this book shelf-worthy, but you’ll gain such an understanding of everything else, you’ll wonder how you made it thru adult life without knowing this basic stuff. Doctors don’t teach this information — we need to take control of our own bodies. If you currently think 10-20 minutes of direct sunlight a day is enough to get your D, then think again. This book is one you’ll read over and over, then return to again. This author shares her personal experiences and the latest research, making this a trusted resource in the health & wellness industry.

Develop your own personalized strategy for sun health
Dr. Laniâs No-Nonsense Sun Health Guide is easily readable, informative, and concise. It was a pleasure as well as very empowering to read it cover to cover to develop an individualized strategy for getting enough sun to maintain an adequate vitamin D supply without exposing yourself to dangerous amounts of sun and risking skin cancer. It is also extremely well organized so that you can quickly access detailed information about a wealth of sun health related issues as particular needs arise. Iâd heartily recommend it for anyone interested in these issues.

A rigorously BALANCED view
What I like about Dr. Lani’s work is that she investigates every claim — be it from the Western medical industry or the “alternative” medical industry. Just because she’s a chiropractor doesn’t mean that she takes alternative medicine’s claims at face value — far from it. And she is equally both critical and open to information and treatment ideas from Western medicine. In a day and age where the layperson had better get educated on her or his conditions and be willing to be proactive and drive the process of diagnosis and treatment, the claims can be overwhelming — both from the Western medicine and “alternative” or “integrative” or “functional” communities. Any/all of them can be irrational and lacking in rigor.Dr. Lani approaches it ALL with logic and balance.
